Perhaps the most consequential subtlety compromising golfer's performance is their desire to control ball flight. We can be blinded and mislead by the games primary task of sending a ball to a target. Surely that should be paramount?
The subtlety that eludes us is a simple matter of "action and reaction". Most any person (including golfers) can accept that one cannot produce a reaction. What one can produce is an action that results in the reaction. The elusive subtlety is that ball fight is a reaction to the action of the golf swing.
To the extent a golfer desires to control their ball flight (reaction) they must fully commit themselves to instead controlling the golf swing (action). If a golfer wants the ball to go in the direction of the target (reaction) their swing must be in the direction of the target. With this being the case, a golfer must direct their intentions to the a "target-related" swing versus a "ball-related swing". Think "club-to-target" instead of "club-to-ball".
Bottom Line: The golfer cannot produce the "reaction". Direct your intention to producing the "action". Work the club to the target not the ball.
