I often remark that golf clubs are the most expensive item you can buy that come with no operating instructions. Many club manufacturers fill the bottom groove on their irons with white paint—but don’t explain why.
The alignment of the clubface at impact accounts for 85% of the direction of your ball flight. Having the clubface square to your target line at address is important. That white line is a valuable aid to club setup.
Here’s how to use that groove (whether it’s painted or not)
At address, raise the club parallel to the ground. Rotate the grip until the white line is vertical (i.e. pointing straight up).
With the club soled, the white line should be perpendicular to your “target line”
With the club soled the white line should be perpendicular to your “toe line”
Practice this at home so it will be normal when you are on the course.
See you next Thursday
