All too often we’ll hear a golfer bemoan a short putt by decrying the putt needed “one more roll”.
The question is how far does the ball travel if it does make one more roll? The answer can be derived from the simple geometry formula we all encountered in high school: (c = πd). For a ball having a diameter of 41.1mm, we multiply that times 3.14 and arrive at the perimeter of 129.6 mm or approx. 5.1 inches.
So when the ball comes to a halt less than 5 inches from the hole (a little more than half the distance from the tip of your little finger to the tip of your thumb when the fingers are stretched wide) all that was needed was in fact “one more roll”.
