Everyone enjoys seeing the ball soar down the fairway. Seeing it soar further down the fairway is even better.
Let’s assume that you are not going to spend extra time in the gym, that you are not going to buy new clubs, and that you haven’t found a golf ball that adds noticeable yardage. Nevertheless, there is yardage to be gained.
It’s interesting to note that the average swing speed on the LPGA tour is 93.4 mph. Coincidentally, a typical speed for male amateurs between 25 and 45 is 93.4. Despite the same swing speed, the players on the LPGA will send the ball 30 yards further than those male amateurs. The difference is the quality of contact.
Optimal contact comprises three factors, each of which should be your goal to optimize your yardage.
center contact…spray your clubface with foot power and notice the location of the impression of the ball at impact. Off-center contact diminishes the energy imparted to the ball.
square clubface…at impact is the clubface perpendicular to the target line. An out-of-square clubface cannot transfer maximal energy from the swing to the ball.
parallel club path…the arc of the club path must be parallel and tangent to the target line. A club path that is “across the line” (i.e. outside-in) cannot impart maximal energy from the swing to the ball.
Want more distance? Improve your swing along these three dimensions and watch that ball soar further down the fairway.
Swing to the target,
