Few golfers haven’t heard Ben Hogan’s comment that “the secret is in the dirt.” He is a legend for his dedication to practice. He remarked, “You hear stories about my beating my brains in practicing, but the truth is, I was enjoying myself. I couldn’t wait to get up in the morning so I could go hit balls.”
But Hogan’s secret was not just about understanding and refining his golf swing. He revealed another important dimension to his practice. “While I am practicing [swing] I am also trying to develop my powers of concentration. I never just walk up and hit the ball. I am practicing and adopting habits of concentration which pay off when I play …Adopt a habit of concentration to the exclusion of everything else around you on the practice tee…” Your ball fight is determined by your golf club. Concentration should be on delivering the club to produce your desired ball flight.
Bottom Line: Take a lesson from Hogan. Every practice session should be about improving your swing and on improving your power of concentration. Can you make five consecutive practice shots with high concentration?
Each Thursday we’ll bring you a helpful insight.
