During a round of golf, have you ever found yourself deciding to “try harder”? If you have, ask yourself was that after you’ve hit a great shot or a poor shot.
Here’s a heads-up for you. What frame of mind, what sense of optimism or positivity do you have after that poor shot? So right away you are handicapped by your mental outlook. To compound the problem, in that state of mind you are going to “try harder”. Is there anything but desperation in the idea of trying harder?
A simple change in messaging can change your fortunes. Here’s the change I learned from renowned sports psychologist, Dr. Bob Rotella. Notice the shift in attitude and focus when you change from “trying harder” to instead “trying your best”.
Bottom Line: As well as physical things we can do to improve our game, there are important psychological things we can do. Be alert to the reaction of telling yourself “I need to try harder” and instead say “I’m going to try my best”.
Each Thursday we’ll bring you a helpful insight.
